The tutors on the site offer three types of private tutorials to help you learn the lingo: face-to-face tutorials, online tutorials, and group tutorials.Face-to-face tutorials are taught with one student and one tutor and tend to be the most costly per hour because you're paying for both bespoke lessons and a bespoke course. They're usually the most cost-effective type of tutorial since every minute in the lesson is spent focusing on you as the student.Online tutorials are similar to the face-to-face tutorials but take place either on a call or over webcam. Thanks to the internet, you can now video conference tutors from all over the world and be taught for less per hour since the tutor won't have the travel costs to worry about and can fit more students into their schedule as a result. Your tutor might even be from China! Finally, group tutorials are more like the classes you'll have had in school with one teacher and multiple students. However, with group tutorials, you and a group of friends (perhaps the people you'll be travelling with) can get in touch with a private tutor to plan lessons that you'll all attend together. While these tend to be the cheapest per student per hour since the cost of the tutor's time is shared, you'll also get far less one-on-one time with your tutor. Each different type of tutori al has its pros and cons and it's really up to you and your budget to decide how much you'll need to learn, how you want to learn, and what your budget is going to be for Chinese language lessons before you go.

Firstly, let’s refresh. Phrasal verbs are two-part verbs including a verb and adverb or verb and preposition.Intransitive phrasal verbs are popular in song lyrics because they are easy to use. They are not followed by an object. However, my students seem to make most mistakes with this kind of phrasal verbs. Why is that? Strategies to Improve Working Memory in Children

Strategies to Improve Working Memory in Children Throughout the course of any given day, children are asked to do a lot of different things, from getting ready to engaging in the classroom, from doing chores to doing homework. In school, your childs job is to learn, but learning is actually quite complex. It requires paying attention, comprehension, active listening, reasoning, critical thinking, making comparisons and organizing thoughtsfor multiple subjects. When all of those activities come easy for children, school usually comes easy too. But if you notice that your child struggles in school and has difficulty remembering important information and focusing on homework, you might wonder whats going on. There could be several contributors, but it is possible that your child has a weak working memory. Working memory is defined as memory that involves storing, focusing attention on, and manipulating information for a short period of time (Merriam-Webster). Years ago, researchers first defined working memory as memory used to plan and carry out behavior (Miller GA, Galanter E, Pribram KH.Plans and the structure of behavior.New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc; 1960.) Put simply, working memory is what helps children remember homework directions long enough to complete the work. It allows them to problem solve when they encounter tricky math homework or a word they do not understand when reading. It helps children recognize when a draft of a writing assignment needs correcting. Children who lack working memory, on the other hand, likely have a range of issues in school, including: Poor memorization skills Difficulty paying attention in class Difficulty staying organized Struggles with completing math calculations in their heads Lots of mistakes in writing (difficulty retaining and remembering grammar rules) Difficulty working independently/easily distracted Often unable to answer questions correctly or thoughtfully when called on in class Often unable to follow multi-step directions Heres the good news: you can help your child improve his or her working memory with brain-boosting exercises and other memory improvement strategies. Here are some easy ways to do so: Make sure your child gets sufficient sleep. Children might roll their eyes at the get more sleep suggestion, but the research doesnt lie: sleep accelerates the improvement in working memory performance. A good night of sleep will help your child improve the memory and increase focusamong many other important benefits. Play memory games. Certain games help children improve working memory because they require them to keep track of moves of their opponents and recall information quickly. Think card games, which require players to remember their cards and keep information in their heads long enough to decide their next move, and games like Simon, which has players memorize and repeat a color pattern that gets increasingly complex. Break down bigger tasks. Have your child break down complex, detailed assignments into smaller steps. He or she should write them down and keep that to-do list visible. To strengthen working memory, encourage your child to use tools like graphic organizers, visual maps and checklists when doing homework. Working memory is one of the most essential functions students needand integral for the cognitive abilities that fuel school success. It is what allows children to manipulate, process and retain information. If you suspect your child has poor working memory, call Huntington. Well evaluate your child to determine his or her strengths and weaknesses and develop a targeted plan of action that focuses on memory improvement, building confidence and improving academic performance. Rethinking education common misconceptions about learning

Rethinking education common misconceptions about learning Our new blog series, ‘rethinking education’, explores common misconceptions about learning and new ways that international teachers can imagine their classrooms while teaching overseas in order to make the most enriching educational experience for students. Many assumptions that teachers make about their students and the way that they learn have no real merit. Read below as we explore these myths and debunk some of them for our readers. Students don’t care about learning One of the biggest misconceptions that needs to be addressed is that all students are uninterested in learning or that they just don’t care. When students appear to not care about their education, there is usually something else at work: perhaps last year, they had a gruelling experience with a teacher, lost a family member, or failed a test that was particularly important to them. Other than what’s happening in the classroom, some teachers argue that their students don’t seem interested in anything that’s happening in the world as a whole. If you’re faced with a few students who don’t seem to care about or engage in current events, it could be as simple as adjusting how you bring current events into the classroom in order to interest your students. As one of the most globally active generations yet, engaging children in issues of importance often just means finding the best way to share this information with them. Ask them to each present on an issue of importance to them to see what matters in their world, and connect with them on these issues. All students nowadays are tech-smart Because computers, the internet, and often times tablets or smart devices are so readily available to students now, some teachers may assume that all their students are well-versed when it comes to technology. This shouldn’t be assumed. Just because the technology is there doesn’t mean that they’ve taken the time to interact with it or understand how it works properly. Take the proper amount of time to teach your students how to use the technology in your classroom instead of assuming that they will know how to work with it. Better safe than sorry! A quiet classroom means that everyone is listening Just because the classroom is quiet doesn’t mean that you have every student’s attention. In fact, a quiet classroom could mean less engagement than a noisier one. If you find students are just sitting quietly, they could be zoned out of the lesson plan. The best way to check for engagement and interest is to ask your students to speak up. Whether you split them up into smaller groups to encourage the participation of quieter students, or you strive for full-class participation, provide regular opportunities for your students to speak up and engage and encourage a chattier environment.

Getting Started on Writing Personal Statements

Getting Started on Writing Personal Statements Getting Started on Writing Personal StatementsThis handout is a starting point, a guide, and a reminder that there is no one-size-fits all statement. You are the only essential ingredient. With that, here are some areas for consideration when writing a personal statement.WHERE DO I START?Read and answer the questions. What is the prompt really asking you to do? The school/scholarship chose those questions for specific reasons. Consider what those might be and how you and your experiences reflect the essential qualities they are seeking. Even if you are applying for multiple schools, it is important not to write one generic statement and then simply adjust it for the different applications. It is easy for readers to tell when a statement is generic and the writer didn’t take the time to thoughtfully answer the questions being asked.Pretend to be your audience. Imagine what it is like to sit on a committee of people who read hundreds, maybe thousands of personal statements. What are you tired of reading? What would really grab your attention? This is not a suggestion that you need to lie and just write what you think your readers want. Absolutely not. This is about finding an angle and figuring out how you and your experiences can be expressed in a way that is not repetitious of what everyone else has already written.Research the specific school or scholarship for which you are applying. What are their values? Do they have a mission statement? What do they hope to get out of admitting you to their school or accepting you for their scholarship? Knowing the answers to these and any other questions about the school can help you add a personal touch to your statement. Let’s say the school or scholarship particularly values community service. In that case, make sure to include and emphasize your own commitment to service in your statement. If you don’t have specific community service hours, look for it in other areas of your life. How else do you better your com munity and give back? It’s important here to recognize that you are still answering the questions specifically asked of you. Researching the school or scholarship is a tool that allows you to include and emphasize certain parts about yourself that align with what the readers are looking for within the body of your answers to their specific questions.Always be asking yourself: why you? Why should the readers choose you? What makes you the best candidate? What do you have that sets you apart? Make sure your readers know why you are an excellent candidate. This is not the kind of writing where you should hedge commentary about yourself (i.e. I’m kind of/sort of/sometimes…).WHAT DO I SAY?Tell a story. Show your readers who you are instead of listing things about yourself (I’m intelligent, determined, and detail-oriented). One of the best ways to do this is by telling a story. However, don’t just tell any story that is interesting to hook the reader. Make sure you can relate th e story to the question being asked and the parts of yourself you want to emphasize.Pick the details you include in the story. Make every detail matter. Don’t include extraneous details, especially if you’re limited to a specific word count. There is a difference between including extraneous details and setting the scene. You can include details that make the story more vivid, but if you go off on tangents that aren’t specifically related to the point you’re trying to make, it can make your writing seem sloppy.Tie the details together. This is when you get to do the telling. What is the point the story is trying to make? Consider this: a candidate named Jack could write a really nice story about a time he walked an elderly person across the street, but that story means very little if Jack doesn’t also write at least a sentence or two on what that event meant to him, how it influenced his decision to apply to this school/scholarship, how it changed him, etc. A problem you c an run into with explanation is presenting the event in the story as though it were an epiphany. Most schools are not interested in your epiphany (And from that moment I knew I had to become a…). Schools/scholarships are interested in your thoughtful decision-making. They are impressed with someone who demonstrates a long-standing commitment to the field/interest/skill/etc.What if you’re not interesting? Many applicants wonder how they can write a story if they don’t feel like they are interesting. It’s important to know that many people don’t have an amazing story of overcoming adversity and succeeding against all odds. You don’t have to write that story to have a great personal statement. Regardless of your experiences, you’ve gotten to the point where you are applying for this school/scholarship. That alone is a success. How have you accomplished all that you’ve already accomplished?HOW DO I SOUND?Know what you’re selling. Are you being yourself? A personal stat ement is more than a list of your accomplishments or a summary of your skills. It is a sample of your writing and a reflection of how you synthesize your experiences. Readers are less interested in what you’ve done and more interested in how you think. Writers sometimes get intimidated by this and try to impress readers by changing their writing style or by using words they don’t understand. These not only come across as insincere, but are also two examples of how writers can sometimes get distracted from the real purpose of a personal statement, which is to demonstrate the ability to candidly and succinctly convey how one understands his or her experiences.Have someone else read your statement and leave time to edit! Ask if, after reading your statement, the reader would want to admit you/give you the scholarship. Why or why not? Does the reader think you sound like every other person applying? Did you talk yourself up enough? Do you sound confident? When you get your reader’ s feedback, take the time to make the adjustments you see fit.

10 culture tips for living in the United Arab Emirates

10 culture tips for living in the United Arab Emirates The United Arab Emirates’ major cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi are some of Teach Away’s most popular teaching destinations. Education and English fluency are highly valued and teachers from all over the globe are being recruited to teach abroad in the UAE.High volumes of teachers heading overseas to instruct in the Middle East means that plenty of people need to learn the region’s distinct set of cultural practices. Here are some taboos we think anyone relocating to the UAE should be aware of:Nobody should ever see the soles of your feet or shoes. Beware of how you sit - especially when crossing one leg over the other. Revealing the underside of your foot to someone is viewed as a rude and disrespectful gesture. Shake hands, make gestures, and eat with your right hand only. Your left is considered unclean and should not be used interpersonally or if it might come in contact with your mouth or food. Don’t point. Finger-pointing is considered rude in certain situations in Wester n culture, but in the UAE, it is something that should always be avoided. No swearing. Emiratis value speaking with respect. Refrain from spitting. Spitting may be interpreted as a very offensive gesture to people in the UAE.During Ramadan, Emiratis do not eat, smoke, or drink during daylight hours. Even if you are not a Muslim, it is important to follow suit and break your fast only after the sun has set.  If you are not a Muslim person, mosques and the Qur’an are off limits. You may come across some mosques that are open to the public, but if you choose to visit, dress respectfully. The Qur’an however should not be touched. Drinking alcohol should only occur in licensed spaces or in the privacy of your own home. “For Ladies Only” signage is used to designate areas that are reserved for women only. Men should always abide by these signs. Handshakes follow a unique protocol in the UAE. A man can shake hands with a man to greet one another, however a man should only shake han ds with a woman when she extends her hand first.  We also published an interesting article on dress code in Abu Dhabi you can check out here: Dress for success in Abu Dhabi

Keyser Computer Tutor

Keyser Computer TutorOne of the most critical jobs for teachers in this day and age is the Keyser Computer Tutor. The Keyser Computer Tutor is the teacher's personal computer. It gives them all the software, tools, and resources to develop digital literacy in their students.A computer tutor is one who specializes in teaching digital literacy by helping their students develop and manage their skills in using computers. In some classrooms, the tutor is referred to as the principal tech. In other classrooms, the teachers refer to the tutor as 'The Principal Tech.'A computer tutor must be the primary resource for their students' personal computer use. Teachers need to understand that they can not just teach the classroom curriculum through physical materials like reading books, manuals, and other resources. They need to teach digital literacy through digital resources.Students also need to know that they have an official resource in the classroom to educate them about the different aspec ts of the computer. Computer technologies are developing so fast that it is almost impossible for any teacher to keep up with all of the latest programs, applications, and tools that are available to students. And while teachers may have a computer at their disposal, their students may not. So instead of waiting for an instructor to teach them, students should learn to go online and learn the basics.Teaching students to go online is relatively easier than most teachers realize. Most teachers think of their own computer as their primary resource. But even if they have their own computer at home, their students can access their personal computer through the school computers that are connected to the internet. The Keyser Computer Tutor is the computer for the classroom. Every classroom has to be digitally literate. Every teacher needs to become an active educator to be sure that they can educate all students to be digitally literate.A computer teacher must have an approachable personali ty, a desire to share knowledge, a desire to motivate students, and a passion for the subject. Having these qualities will make a teacher an excellent Keyser Computer Tutor.
